Here is an email I sent to Bob McCown this morning after I heard him on his show yesterday refer to me as some mad looney who he feared was going to attack him with some sort of thermonuclear device, only because I posted about him the other day1:
I laughed aloud in my car yesterday when your show started and I found myself the topic of your daily rant. I really didn’t expect you or your crew to be so in touch with the times that you would have read my posting last Tuesday. However, I do find it particularly immature that you wouldn’t take my call. I would have loved to explain my point of view, heck, I even would have offered a retraction regarding the part of the post that probably pissed you off. (The second half was quite the rant about Sportsnet and how the NHL does business with out of market teams, you just got caught in the crossfire.)
However, I find it funny that while you, in your logic, can justify not talking to me because it is ‘your’ show, you won’t not leave my blog alone. I am entitled to my opinion as well. I choose to seek a larger audience to force it upon, thus making my opinion public on the internet. And yes, being a minority Senators fan in Leafdom, that means I may have to ruffle feathers a bit more in order to get my message out.
Just so you know, before I hung up yesterday and gave up on any chance of you being civil, I did hear you talking to a caller about the trap, and I did hear you agree, that under the right circumstances, you could find a low scoring game appealing. Funny, I think that’s what my point was. Too bad we couldn’t have discussed it on air or otherwise.
In regards to the trap, I do have to agree with you on some points, sometimes the trap can be brutal to watch. But if you’ve got the lead in an important game, it can be pretty exciting. During the regular season it is horrible to watch. Most of the games mean absolutely nothing and teams like NJ will play the trap to death when they’ve got a one goal lead even against the absolute worst of competitors. Ahem, Philly.
That said, the trap can be broken. The CBC had Pat Quinn on before the first Ottawa vs. New Jersey semi-final game this year, and respectfully credited him with being the first coach to break the trap. I don’t recall Ottawa having any problem dealing with it during that series. What you need is a fast team, something of which Toronto hasn’t been able to put on the ice in a long time.

Despite what people may think, I’m not just trying to get on his nerves. he made his opinion clear, I wanted to call him on it. He decided that he is too far above the common man to discuss the issue with someone who has a contrary opinion to his own. Childish?
